Congratulations to our Dr. Amie Rodda!!
She had a baby boy on February 28, 2009 who was named Jacob Scott. He joins his proud parents and big sister Lizzie. He is at home and doing well.
Labrador Retriever leads the AKC's Top 10 list.
The 2nd most popular breed for 2008 was the Yorkshire Terrier, followed by the German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Beagle, Boxer, Dachsund, Bulldog, Poodle and Shih Tzu.
Three New Breeds Join the AKC
Three new breeds were added to the AKC (American Kennel Club) this year; the Irish Red and White Setter, Pyrenean Shepherd and the Norwegian Buhund.
The Irish Red and White Setter is part of the sporting-group breed and is a native of Ireland. The temperament of this Setter is kind and friendly. Some health issues associated with this breed are: Canine leukocyte adhesion deficiency, an inherited form of cataracts, a tendency to be affected by by autoimmune thyroiditis and limited reports of hip dysplasia and von Willebrand's disease.
The Pyrenean Shepherd is part of the herding group and originated in the French Pyrenees. This breed generally is distrustful of strangers but can be socialized and is very loyal to its owners. They are also very energetic and active. This breed is fairly healthy. We occasionally see cases of hip dysplasia, epilepsy and sub-luxated patellae, pate3nt ductus arteriosus and progressive retinal atrophy.
The Norweian Buhund is also part of the herding group and originated in Norway as a general farm dog. This breed is high energy with great stamina that often acts as a self-appointed watchdog. It is also known as alert, lively and affectionate. There is limited disease information on this breed but cases have been reported of inherited eye and hip problems. Also, since this is a working breed there are reports of hip dysplasia.
